"2nd LIEUT. J. SCUDAMORE. This most promising young officer was killed in action in France on September 25th 1915, in his 20th year whilst serving with the 2nd Battalion. He received his commission on May 12th, and was for a short time time attached to 5th Special Reserve Battalion. He was the only child of Lieutenant Colonel C.P. Scudamore, DSO late Royal Scots Fusiliers, and Mrs. Scudamore of Yarrow Field, Mayford, Surrey."
This sword is a sad reminder of those days when young men barely out of their teens were killed quickly in action after a very short time at the front. Because his service life is short, there is not much on young Scudamore. After his death, his father, Brigadier CP Scudamore DSO accepted his sword and other effects of his only son and one can see the loving care the family nurtured in this sword, an only reminder of their only son. It's in an absolute immaculate state like as if it was made yesterday. In its 99th year, its amazing.
